Mike’s been in touch with his N scale door layout.
Yup, it’s made on a hollow core door.
The dimensions are 80 x 36 inches.
You can see how much he has packed in to his layout here.
Here’s the track layout plan:
Here’s the same layout with the parts:
And here’s a pic of Mike’s layout:
Mike has also sent written a really nice narrative on his model railroad build too. It’s right here.
He’s packed a lot of a track on to a standard sized door, but it doesn’t look cramped at all.
Mike’s layout is also a good example of something – it’s heart warming how many of them are a reflection of fond boyhood memories – if you read Mike’s narrative you’ll see his done a wonderful job of recreating them. It’s just one of the wonderful things about this hobby. You may only have the space of a hollow door, but you can build your own little world, with your rules, and fill it with anything that makes you smile.
A lot of folk when the describe their layout, use the phrase, “My layout, my rules” – and quite right too!
And to prove a point here’s Mike’s elevated model train track, complete with a zoo and dinosaurs.
Here’s Ken’s HO scale loop, complete with Godzilla (It’s surprising how many layouts have Godzilla in them)
Jeff’s N scale Western Maryland (See if you can spot Godzilla).
Anyhow, you get the picture: your layout, your rules. If you want to model childhood memories, that’s fine, and so is Godzilla and dinosaurs.
It’s really up to you, you are only limited by your imagination. I’ve even seen one with a floating submarine, which at first I thought was somebody trying to prank me for April fool, but no. Have a look and see for yourself:

But back to Mike, he’s done a fine job of recreating childhood memories on his N scale door layout.
