HO scale 9×5 track plan

Manny’s HO scale 9×5 track plan makes the most of his space:

If you read Manny’s narrative there’s some great take aways too.

Guess when he started this layout? In the 70s! It’s a great example of two things:

Firstly, a layout is never truely finished. You’ll always have kinks to iron out and scenes you’re not happy with. Or you’ll want to extend it, add a lake, another loop… you get the idea. There will always be something you want to do to it.

Secondly, this hobby is all about going at your own pace. There’s no hurry, just enjoy it. It’ll drive you mad at times, but you’ll soon forget about that when you get those trains running. Many folk just work on their layout in the winter months. Others only do it when it takes their fancy.

So there you go, your model trains will keep you busy for decades.

Another thing I should point out on Manny’s layout is it’s another one on castor wheels. It makes such a difference being able to get at all the nooks and crannies. You’ll be surprised how long you have to endure uncomfortable positions while you put track and scenery. Castor wheels really do lighten the load when it comes to this.

This also reminds me about another thing – the height of your layout.

Make it too low and you’ll hate working on it. It won’t take you long to get back pain and that will suck out all the enjoyment of working on your layout.

Make it too high and you can’t reach stuff and the grandkids can’t see it.

Anyhow, back to Manny. I really enjoyed his HO scale 9×5 layout. It’s a great track plan and he’s done wonders with his scenery.
