S scale track plan

John has shared his simple S scale track plan.

Track plans don’t have to be complicated – this one is as simple as it gets.

You can see the pics John’s S scale layout here.

What I really liked about John’s layout – and this is true of so many – is how it got the rest of the family involved, or rather, his son.

There is something immensely satisfying about playing with trains with family, and over the years I’ve lost count of people who write in with fond, fond memories of the time they spent with the old man, building a layout.

Here’s an example for you – it’s a stunning layout, but for me it’s the backstory that made this post:

It works the other way too – the kids show a little interest when they are nippers, but soon grow out of it, leaving the dad’s to go it alone when they rediscover the train set they couldn’t bear to throw out:

In fact, another common theme is using a retirement to ‘build a layout for the grandkids’. We all know what’s really going on – grandad’s have more fun than anyone.

Anyhow, back to John and his simple S scale track plan. Personally, I’m a fan of simple. A simple layout allows for trouble free train running and lets you concentrate on the scenery.

Also, a layout this size is never going to be intimidating.

Some people like just to run trains. Some folk just like taking forever on the scenery, and some folk like both. It’s another great thing about this hobby, you can just do the parts you enjoy.

Don’t like running trains – just do a diaroma, like Ben:

Next up, an N scale door layout.
