6×4 track plan

Jim’s 6×4 track plan is simple but looks great fun:

You can see the picture of this 6×4 track plan here.

As you’ll read, I’m often saying track plans with a theme always turn out better than the ones that don’t. Jim used his interest in local history to put create his imaginary ‘Holland Odessa Rail Road’, based in the early 1900s.

You can see from his pics that he’s great fun doing it.

What’s more the size of the layout meant that castors on his table legs made it easy to get to every inch of the table. Now this made sound like a small point, but you’ll be amazed how long you have to stay in uncomfortable positions to get your track and scenery just right.

Being able to reach everything easily makes a massive difference – it’s why you see a lot of layouts with a hole in the middle – it’s fun to sit in there and run trains, but it also means you can reach everything too.

You’ll see in the pics that Jim also put double layers of insulation foam down too. This allowed him to carve it out to make rivers and canals on his layout.

Again, it’s a small point, but a little planning generally goes a long way with a layout. Adding water to your scenery is another dollop of fun and can really make a layout pop – though, I have to be honest, when water goes wrong, it goes really wrong.

Anyhow, if you look at the pics you can see Jim did a fantastic job with the scenery on this 6×4 track plan.

And I know I keep on saying it, but a having a theme really does make a difference with a layout.

Now on to a triple loop with sidings.
